Kenya was out of my first litter. She was my beginning and through our journey to the end she taught me so much. She started her show career with many puppy wins. Went on to finish her UKC Championship, was pointed in AKC taking a Group 1 Bred By Exhibitor and was also pointed in ASCA’s altered program.
Three years ago Kenya was diagnosed with diabetes insipidus (DI). Unlike diabetes mellitus, which affects blood sugar, diabetes insipidus is the body’s inability to concentrate urine. As a result they have to urinate frequently and produce large volumes. Since her diagnosis we had been giving her twice daily injections of Desmopressin. This drug is the synthetic replacement for the hormone that reduces urine production. We had very good results with this drug until approximately 6 months before Kenya passed. In her last months she had a number of complications. We let Kenya pass peacefully on Wednesday, July 27, 2011.
My veterinarian, Dr. Amy Hudson, is an absolutely amazing women and I was very lucky to have found her. Kenya was the first case of DI she had seen and she successfully diagnosed it, managed it through the medication and dealt with the complications. Kenya enjoyed a comfortable life because of Dr. Hudson. A huge thank you for everything you have done.
